Background of the Study
Language policy plays a critical role in shaping linguistic practices, and its influence is particularly evident in Nigerian educational broadcasts. These broadcasts, intended to promote standardized language use in academic settings, simultaneously reflect regional phonological variations influenced by local dialects and cultural practices (Balogun, 2023). This study examines how language policies impact phonological features such as pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns in educational broadcasts across Nigeria. Despite official directives aimed at homogenizing language use, natural speech often deviates due to regional influences and ingrained linguistic habits (Akanbi, 2024). Through a comparative analysis of broadcasts from different regions, this research investigates the extent to which policy directives are implemented and how they interact with local phonological tendencies. The study employs acoustic analysis and content evaluation to understand whether language policies effectively promote a standardized phonological model or if regional accents persist. Ultimately, the research seeks to illuminate the practical outcomes of language policies on spoken Nigerian English in educational contexts and their broader implications for language planning and instruction (Olusegun, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although language policy is designed to standardize linguistic practices in educational settings, there is limited research on its direct impact on phonological features in Nigerian educational broadcasts. Existing studies often focus on policy formulation without examining the phonetic consequences of these directives (Ibrahim, 2023). This disconnect raises concerns about the effectiveness of language policies in achieving phonological uniformity. Regional variations in pronunciation and accent continue to persist, suggesting that policy implementation may not fully align with actual broadcast practices. The lack of empirical data on how language policies affect phonology hampers efforts to improve communication clarity and educational outcomes (Ogundele, 2024). This study aims to fill this gap by providing a comparative analysis of phonological patterns in educational broadcasts, offering insights into the practical impact of language policy on spoken Nigerian English (Uche, 2025).
